It has been my privilege during my life to work with many different people, from all walks of life and from all across the globe, executive boards of multi-national companies to tribal leaders in developing countries. My journeys have convinced me of several fundamental truths:
- Leaders are made not born
- Everyone has a leadership potential but most of us are either unaware of this potential, are given little opportunity to develop it or choose not to
- Leadership is intensely personal – it starts with you
- Leadership is learnt by being a leader and then from learning from these experiences; both are essential but the former is often given more importance than the latter
- As Aristotle said the most important virtue is courage
- That being an inspiring leader requires you to align your mind, body and spirit behind your vision, and purpose – doing this can have a transformational effect on those around you
- Leaders create the conditions where other people can be successful; inspiring leaders create the conditions where people can deliver results that they did not think possible, and enjoy doing it
- As Winston Churchill said the path of leadership is a choice, not a position, and that the only people who can call you a leader are your followers
- Leaders make the difference to teams, organisations and societies – it is that simple. The difference can be between success and failure, profit and loss, progress or retreat.
- Developing your leadership potential is accelerated, more effective and takes less effort with good quality leadership training, coaching and role models
