"Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance; helping them to learn rather than teaching them."
Timothy Gallwey, author of 'The Inner Game'
Performance Coaching is about helping you to raise your game, or as the author Robert Louis Stephenson once wrote, "To be who you are and to become what you are capable of becoming". The best analogy is perhaps of a sports coach - someone is not on the playing field with you but who is supporting you before, after and sometimes during competition to focus on your goals, direction, style and purpose. Sometime this process requires you to explore what you are doing at a straightforward task level - 'What do I have to do?'. More often, however, it requires you to ask deeper questions of yourself such as 'How should I be doing this?'. Such questions necessitate looking inwards as well as outwards, reflecting on who you, your world view and your leadership behaviours in a variety of situations. This is your leadership journey.

High performing teams can achieve outstanding results and make some of the most rewarding environments for people to work in. Such teams are also central to most organisation's strategy and way of working. Sometimes, teams will form quickly around a clear purpose and a talented group of individuals, focussed around a capable leader. Often, however, forming a team can be accelerated and made more effective by creating the opportunity for the team to really understand why it exists, who is in the team and how they are going to work together. NASA would not consider sending one of it's manned space missions into orbit without first sending the crew on a team development programme. Yet many organisations take similar risks without this preparation.

The ideal environment for this fast track learning experience is in an adventure or wilderness setting. Many of our team have an extensive background in wilderness travel, mountain sports, the military and expeditions, and since 1995 we have been developing the concept of adventure and wilderness based programmes for organisational leaders. Our team have run programmes all over the globe.

During November 2003 in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, two teams of volunteers took part in a unique and challenging adventure experience that required them to compete regularly against each other in demanding, physical contests of courage, fitness and teamwork. The teams were, however, run in two very different ways to explore the impact of different leadership styles on team, and individual, performance. The programme was produced by RDF Media and screened in 2004 over three episodes on Channel 4 as 'The Carrot or The Stick'.
